Why this petition matters

Started by Sabina H Hercules

The Windrush generation are mostly Caribbean families from Commonwealth countries invited to the UK to help rebuild the country after World War Two. Britain is their home, but many have been subject to deportation, lost their jobs, homes, healthcare and had their lives put on hold. Some were even deported thousands of miles away from their family home.

The true extent of this scandal broke in 2018, and the Government was forced to apologise and give compensation to those whose lives were affected. Despite the scheme being launched two years ago, only 5% of the many people who have submitted claims have been paid compensation. Many are left in limbo and as an immigration advisor supporting people whose lives have been devastated, I can see the anguish this is causing. That’s why I’m calling on the Government to introduce a 6 month deadline to settle claims.

Without a deadline, people are left not knowing what their future looks like or how long it’ll be before they can access support. It means they struggle to move on with their lives.

We believe that the Home Office must stop furthering the pain of victims of the Windrush scandal. If the Government were sincere in their apology, it's time for the hostile environment to come to an end and they compensate victims fairly.
