Rights for rabbits

The Issue

As of today, rabbits are the UK's 3rd most popular pet. Although their popularity, many rabbits still do not have their basic welfare needs met in the forms of spacial requirements & companionship. Although all pets are covered in the animal welfare act of 2006 this document is brief, vague & not specific to many different species needs, leaving much room for interpretation.

Rabbits have complex needs, many of which we have only recently started learning about & understanding. The RSPCA & RWAF do a great job at recommending how rabbits should be properly cared for in terms of how much space they need & explaining their need for social contact of the same species. However, as these are only recommendations this leaves a huge proportion of rabbit owners not listening or understanding this species complex care needs.

I want to call for the UK government to put in place a legislation for spacial requirements for rabbits measuring a minimum of 4mx3mx2m (L,W&H) & also for rabbits to be legally sold & kept in bonded pairs or groups unless a vet suggests it would be unwise due to health or behavioural issues.

I have spent the last four years studying animal behaviour & welfare, focusing mainly on rabbits. I want to go on to advocate for this highly misunderstood species in any way possible & will not stop until legislations are in place to protect them. Please help me on my mission, by signing this petition to help rabbits in the UK be better protected from mistreatment by having their most basic welfare needs be a legal requirement.
