At present, buyers of new electric cars and electric motor bikes recieve £3k and £500 in govt subsidy respectively. No similar subsidy exists for electric assist bikes (ebikes) that not only can help solve traffic congestion and pollution problems but offer exercise as well. In addition they offer a means to safely get Britain moving whilst reducing the risk of corona virus contagion,
As well as offering exercise, ebikes offer the opportunity to travel in parts of the UK that many consider too hilly to cycle, that is no longer the case with an ebike.

The cost of ebikes can be reduced for those in work by eliminating VAT by the existing cycle to work scheme. Not all can benefit by this, I therefore ask that the UK government be prepared to subsidise the price of new ebikes by either the VAT amount or £400 whichever is the greater.
