The contact tracing application can help us get a better picture of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK. It can save lives and help us get back to a normal life.

However, the UK government has a long history of abusing our digital freedoms. GCHQ has been found guilty of keeping illegal databases on UK citizens in the past* and the idea of installing an application on our most personal device that surreptitiously hands over data to government controlled databases frightens many.

I am proposing that the tax-payer funded application should be open sourced in order for third-parties to be able to audit the application, the data is collects, and the safety of the application. The UK government does some fantastic work in open sourcing many of the applications that it's citizens use through the GDS initiative**, but for something that hands over location data and who we meet with, it is imperative that we have access to the code of the COVID-19 contact tracing app.
