Make it illegal to leave a dog in a car unattended

The Issue

Many people still think it is ok to leave a dog in a car on a warm day. Quite simply, it's not.

A car can become very hot, very quickly even with the window left slightly down and it becomes a dangerous situation for the dog involved. At around 20 degrees outside, a car can take less than an hour to get up to 47 degrees inside - an unbearable amount of heat for a person, let alone a dog.

At the moment, there appears to be a grey area as to what a person can do when they see a dog inside a car. If you break in to the car to get the dog out, you could be liable for criminal damage should the owner of the car want to pursue that course of action. Of course, you can claim you were saving a life should it go as far as court, but you would need justification for your actions.

We're told to call 999 and wait for the police, but what happens if we wait too long or the police aren't quick enough to attend? What do we do then?
Well, we think it's time the government outright banned people from leaving dogs inside cars unattended. Cut out the middleman and cut out the uncertainty. If an owner leaves a dog inside a car unattended, they get fined or worse, depending on the state of the dog.

It's not like we're not privy to enough information about this kind of thing now and dog owners should know that leaving their dog inside a car is animal cruelty - and you'd be punished for that.

That's why we started this petition which will hopefully get enough signatures that we can then take it to the powers that be and get this law changed.

Dogs are losing lives because of the carelessness of their owners. Let's not be party to this by being equally careless and not changing the law.
