People probably thought it was reactionary after the general election, but this petition was planned many weeks ago in the event of a Tory government gaining power that would once again hurt Liverpool. I felt it would be a statement shared by many in the city and it would be helpful for it to be formalised.
Liverpool independence is just that, a statement. We don’t think like the rest of England. Typically we are not proud to be British. “Scouse not English” as the saying goes.
I’ve had about 100 messages asking questions about it. Mainly, is Liverpool independence actually possible? Well technically, yes. But it would be extremely difficult.
It would have to be like Scotland or Ireland, you’d need a Political Party pushing for it. There are 21 parliamentary seats on Merseyside (not including Southport, who have given the Conservatives a seat on Merseyside), all Labour held. Odds are, nobody would vote for a new party and we wouldn’t want to take votes away from a Left-Wing Socialist Labour Party - if the party remains that way.
This petition is a strong statement that Liverpool feels left out of the UK, when in reality, we are one of the most important cities. Any future trade negotiations with the USA will need access to the ports of Liverpool. We are fed up of Austerity, Racism, Xenophobia, Homelessness, Foodbanks and Warmongering Politicians.
If you agree, keep signing, keep sharing and let’s hope this sends a strong message of how Liverpool is culturally different than the rest of the UK and we don’t recognise nor want a “Great” British identity.
