Include more diversity in the UK School Curriculum

The Issue

It is important for children growing up in a privileged country like the UK to be aware of what has happened with our country in the past. We do not want children to be blind to the horrific and disturbing acts that England has partaken in, and although we are now much more accepting of diversity, there is still more progress to be made. I believe that students from across the country should be able to recognise and empathise with those who have experienced the most atrocious acts under our country. We should not act as if it did not happen. British Colonisation needs to be more talked about in schools. It needs to be taught in depth, and discussions must be made from it.

Racism still exists in the UK, and in order for that to be somewhat eradicated, the next generation must be taught about what has happened in the past; they must be taught about the most heinous actions. Having conversations about racism is very helpful, insightful for many children. Children need to learn about slavery. I am aware that there are a few lessons spent on this subject in secondary school, but it needs to be taught a lot more. Integrating it into registration time, having conversations about it, reading more books on slavery and going into more detail about why slavery happened is very crucial for children to know.

The current curriculum, for both primary and secondary schools needs to be diversified. British culture is important, but it is also crucial that children know more about different cultures and nationalities, so that when they are in the 'real world', they are able to establish themselves as knowledgeable about the world and what it has to give. Also, a diversified curriculum gives children the ability to speak out if they see something wrong or unacceptable in their own lives - it teaches children to be aware about what and who they surround themselves with.
