UK Government: End Elephant Captivity

The Issue

We call on the UK Government to introduce legislation that prohibits the keeping, breeding, importation, and acquisition of elephants in zoos and other captive settings in the UK. Existing elephants should be allowed to live out their lives in appropriate sanctuaries or existing facilities without replacement.

Elephants are highly intelligent, social beings with complex emotional and physical needs that cannot be met in captivity. Scientific reviews have consistently shown that confinement in zoos causes severe physical and psychological harm to elephants, including stress, obesity, infertility, lameness, and reduced lifespan.

The UK Elephant Welfare Group has acknowledged serious welfare concerns, and reports have suggested that a phase-out was under consideration. However, no official legislation has been passed.

We urge the Government to act now, just as it did for wild animals in circuses, and take a clear stance against keeping elephants in zoos. It is time to end this outdated and harmful practice.
