Call on the UK Government to Ban Grouse Shooting

The Issue

The driven grouse shooting season opens on the "Glorious Twelfth" (of August) and involves a line of beaters driving the birds towards waiting guns, which are firing lead shot from butts. Killing birds for sport is cruel and uncivilised. There has to be a ban on lead ammunition. Large quantities of lead shot are discharged, which is toxic to wildlife. Muirburn, is the practice of heather burning to regenerate moors. An unnatural, heather-rich environment is created because the grouse thrive on young heather shoots. When the heather is burned wildlife can be harmed and the environment is damaged and polluted. Tens of thousands of foxes, stoats, weasels, crows and mountain hares are snared, trapped and killed. Also, hen harriers, red kites and golden eagles. All killed for the purpose of this so called sport. The rural economy is in turmoil due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Surely, many people will be bewildered at anyone wanting to continue this crazy pursuit of grouse shooting. Which, is why I call on the Government and Defra to Ban Grouse Shooting.
