On 11 November 2015 my young cat and the young cat next door both died as a result of antifreeze poisoning.  It was very sudden and very traumatic.

Antifreeze preparations (including screen washes) contain a substance called Ethylene Glycol that is highly toxic and kills thousands of domestic pets every year.  A lot of people are unaware of the dangers of this, but a small amount spilled when topping up a car or a leaking radiator can leave enough to kill an animal.  Just a tiny amount can kill a cat and also a small amount can kill a dog.  There are also those people who soak food in antifreeze and leave it out to deliberately poison dogs and cats. Despite being so highly toxic to all animals, including humans, antifreeze tastes sweet and very palatable.  If it was not so sweet, animals would not lick it up when spilled.

We want a bittering agent added to ALL antifreeze preparations. This would save thousands of animals’ lives every year. If your pet is poisoned with this substance, and you not get them to a vet immediately, they will not survive.  It causes blindness, seizures, kidney failure and death and is devastating for any animal lover and their cat or dog to experience.  It is shameless that despite repeated campaigning nothing is done about this and it could be so easily resolved.
