A second year undergraduate student of SRM Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai was sexually harassed by a man in an elevator in her own hostel.
When she complained to the college authorities, not only was she denied adequate measures, but also shamed for her clothes, and was told that the incident occurred 'because she was a north Indian girl studying in a south Indian city'.
The college was trying to justify the harassment and blame the student instead of helping her.
How many such headlines will University Grants Comission and the ministries see before they take action?
How many students will have to suffer such trauma and face such apathy and inaction from their own places of education?
How many times should students have to rally for their right to safe education and compliant universities?
Let's stand in solidarity with the students of India. Please share this petition far and wide to ensure that UGC and the ministries break their silence and act NOW to make India's universities safer.
Meanwhile, to equip students with available information for their safety and to make them aware of their rights, you can share this compilation of crowdsourced resources that they can rely on in case they need help/ support. Here's the link : https://www.tgthr.today/social-justice-welfare
Thank you for standing by us so far and saying 'It's not okay' to the decision makers.
By sharing this petition far and wide, let's show UGC that we care about India's students and they need to ensure #SaferCampusesNOW.
