Fox 5 Atlanta recently covered a story involving the firing of a UGA police officer for following a new medical amnesty law while dealing with two underage drinkers. State of Georgia lawmakers passed GA HB 965 on April 24, 2014 which extends immunity from arrest for those seeking medical help for alcohol/drug emergencies. After responding to a call for medical assistance in a university dormitory, Officer Jay Park was sent home by his sergeant for not charging two underage drinkers with underage consumption of alcohol since his understanding was that they were covered under medical amnesty. Two days later, Officer Park was dismissed from his job as a police officer for the University of Georgia Police Department for seeking advice from outside sources on how to apply the law. This police officer did his duty to "providing a safe and harmonious environment wherein our community can thrive" as the UGAPD website states as their department goal. Instead of being promoted for his dedication to being informed and following the law, his badge was stripped from him forcing him to work as a convenience store clerk to support his family. Please sign this petition to request that the University of Georgia Police Department reinstate Officer Jay Park, expunge his negative personnel record for insubordination, and demand that they obey the same laws that they are sworn to enforce.
