Ugandans Demand an Independent Investigation into Speaker Anita Among’s Wealth and Public
The Issue
We, the undersigned Ugandans and supporters of accountability, demand an independent, transparent investigation into Speaker Anita Annet Among’s wealth, assets, public spending, and alleged misuse of public resources.
This petition is based on publicly reported information, official sanctions, and public-interest concerns. It is not a personal attack. It is a call for transparency, accountability, and due process.
In April 2024, the United Kingdom sanctioned Anita Annet Among under its Global Anti-Corruption sanctions regime. The UK government stated that she was sanctioned in relation to serious corruption and that she “benefited from the proceeds” of the Karamoja iron sheets scandal, which involved resources meant for vulnerable communities.gov.uk
In May 2024, the United States publicly designated Speaker Anita Among, stating that she was designated due to involvement in “significant corruption tied to her leadership of Uganda’s Parliament.”Monitor
There have also been public reports and civic concerns about alleged misuse of parliamentary resources, unexplained wealth, and extravagant public spending connected to Uganda’s Parliament. AP reported that Speaker Among had been under scrutiny over the source of her wealth and allegations relating to misuse of parliamentary resources.Apnews
Most recently, Daily Monitor reported that Speaker Among had received a 2025 Rolls-Royce Cullinan, valued at about £440,000, or approximately Shs2.2 billion before full local costs. At a time when many Ugandans are struggling with poverty, unemployment, poor healthcare, poor schools, and high cost of living, such reports raise serious public-interest questions about the source of wealth and whether public office is being used for private luxury.Monitor
We are not asking for mob justice. We are asking for lawful investigation, public explanation, independent audit, and accountability.
Ugandans deserve answers to the following questions:
- What is the lawful source of Speaker Anita Among’s wealth and luxury assets?
- Has Parliament’s spending under her leadership been fully and independently audited?
- Were any public funds, allowances, travel budgets, benefits, or parliamentary resources misused?
- What is the full status of investigations related to the Karamoja iron sheets scandal?
- Have Uganda’s anti-corruption institutions properly investigated the allegations raised by citizens, journalists, activists, and international sanctions authorities?
- Are whistleblowers, journalists, and citizens who expose corruption being protected?
We therefore call on the Inspectorate of Government, Office of the Auditor General, Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Parliament of Uganda, Ministry of Ethics and Integrity, and all responsible institutions to:
- Open and publish the status of investigations into corruption allegations involving Speaker Anita Among.
- Conduct a full independent audit of Parliament’s spending under her leadership.
- Investigate concerns about unexplained wealth, luxury assets, allowances, travel spending, and use of public resources.
- Publish clear findings in a transparent manner.
- Recover any public funds found to have been misused.
- Protect whistleblowers, journalists, activists, and citizens who expose corruption.
- Ensure that any official found guilty through lawful process faces prosecution, dismissal, asset recovery, and other legal consequences.
Uganda cannot fight corruption selectively. Accountability must apply to everyone, especially those in the highest offices.Public money belongs to the people!
We sign this petition to demand an independent investigation into Speaker Anita Among’s wealth and public spending.
