UGA should rightfully claim 1946 College Football National Title

The Issue

In 1946, the University of Georgia Bulldogs College Football team finished the season 11-0, the highest ranked undefeated team.

The UGA football team finished the 1946 season winning all 11 games, undefeated and ranked #3 in the final AP poll behind #1 Notre Dame and #2 Army. Neither Notre Dame nor Army went undefeated during the regular season in 1946. Both Notre Dame and Army finished the season with less than 10 wins and less than perfect records having tied each other during the regular season.

Final AP Poll 1946 Season:

#1 Notre Dame Record: 8-0-1

#2 Army   Record: 9-0-1

#3 UGA   Record: 11-0

In Dec. 1946, prior to bowl season, Notre Dame was named #1 in the final AP poll. It is noteworthy that Notre Dame and Army did not play in bowl games following the 1946 season. UGA however defeated the #9 ranked UNC in the Jan. 1947 Sugar Bowl, one of 4 major bowl games of the postseason at that time.

The UGA Athletic Dept., administration and fans should claim the 1946 College Football National Championship.
