The Issue

Democratic primary voters have spoken clearly, and have chosen Zohran Mamdani to be the party’s nominee for mayor. On June 24, voters rallied behind Zohran’s bold vision to make New York City affordable for working-class families—a rent freeze for 2 million rent-stabilized tenants, universal child care, fast and free buses, city-owned grocery stores, and standing up to Trump to maintain NYC as a Sanctuary City for immigrants, all while rejecting corporate and billionaire donations. On education, Zohran will fight for full funding of our schools, more counselors and nurses, and implement the State law to lower class sizes. He will revitalize our public schools with healthy, green infrastructure by renovating 500 public schools with renewable energy infrastructure and building 500 green schoolyards.

As UFT members, we urge our union to stand with the 400,000+ NYC voters who ranked Zohran number one on their ballots and with the 50,000+ volunteers who went door-to-door in the rain and stood at poll sites in 100-degree heat. Many of these volunteers were educators themselves and education was the top profession donating to Zohran’s campaign.

We call on the UFT to join DC37, the UAW, the PSC and other unions that endorsed Zohran for the primary, as well as the growing number of unions that have endorsed since the primary including 32BJ, NYSNA and HTC. We urge the UFT to swiftly endorse Zohran Mamdani, a candidate who understands the power of organizing, and a candidate we can trust to wield that power to champion the rights of our members, students and families, immigrants, and all working people.
