The person who called the police on Oumou at Smith college should be held accountable.
The Issue
Stop calling cops on black students, it is appalling that someone would call a police on a student for simply taking a lunch break on her college campus cafetteria. She had worked all day with students in her STEM program. When Oumou Kanoute completed her shift, she went to her college cafeteria to eat lunch and a cop was called on her. Oumou Kanoute was not threatening anyone, but simply eating her lunch. Upon watching her interview video, I went to Smith’s college website to see the action taken by the school, but all I read was a statement from the college president apologizing and stating more needs to be done to make minority students feel welcomed. I am greatly saddened and disappointed by the inaction of the school. As a mother of three black teenagers, one already in college, the second a senior in high school and a third in 8th grade I feel more needs to be done to keep our black students safe on college campuses. Smith college needs to validate this student’s traumatic experience by taking action against the perpetrator. By simply releasing a statement, Smith college is not acknowledging how painfully embarrassing and traumatic the experience was for Oumou Kanoute. Please join me in requesting that Smith college take action against the person who called the police on an innocent black student.
