UCSB Should Offer Hybrid Options
The Issue
First of all, the goal of this petition is not to enforce a fully remote Winter 2022. I believe that students who wish to attend class in person have the ability and freedom to do so. However, on the other end, students who do not want to risk their health (and the health of others) should be allowed to stay remote.
How will this work out then? Essentially, why is it not possible for students to submit everything they need for the class online? The students who want in person classes can go in, while the students who do not stay off of campus. EVERYONE submits homework, quizzes, exams, essays, etc. ONLINE. This not only allows students to learn comfortably depending on their preferences but also allows students to be spread out in lecture halls (less people attending in person). If you force students one way or the other, it only fosters negativity and ultimately yields more hostile environments (ie mask shaming both ways, etc.). Obviously, this is only one of many ideas.
If there is even an ounce of respect for human health, I hope this petition reaches not only the hearts but also the minds of the UCSB decision makers. Instead of outright lying that the situation is getting better to force in person classes, how about we come together to create a solution or plan to enter the second half of our winter quarter safely and comfortably.
