Fix the bike lanes on UCSB campus
The Issue
I make this petition today to voice the animosity I feel towards the atrocious bike lanes students are using every day just to get to class. You may think, "why don't you just walk or try to bike on the better paved bike paths?" First, walking to campus could be the most logical way out of avoiding bike paths, but when a student has class in the Chemistry building or Broida Hall it becomes difficult to walk from IV to the far end of campus and make it to class on time. UCSB is a biking campus, it is the norm and the given mode of transportation of many Gauchos so expecting students to suddenly walk everywhere will not work. Adding on, the frequently used bike paths are the ones that are most in need for a re-vamp. Just today, as I was turning the corner right before the round-about in front of the Ucen, my front wheel fastened oh so perfectly into a pot hole and next thing I knew, I was on the floor, blocking incoming traffic. I was infuriated as this was not the first time I've lost control of my bike because of the horrendous condition the paths are in. However, the tumble I took became my motivation and the determining factor that led me here, to this petition.
I, and the many Gauchos who sign this petition, ask that the bike paths are re-done by filling in holes and fixing imperfections in the roads which make biking a difficulty. Specifically, repair needs to be done on the path starting at San Rafael Dorms all the way to the round-about in front of the SRB. Additional repair is needed for the paths near the round-about in front of the Ucen and South Hall. Repair for the paths can be put in place for the summer as there are less students in town and on campus using bike lanes. By upgrading bike lanes on our campus, biking becomes less of a hassle to students which in the end leads to happier active students on our campus. Happy Gauchos mean better students better campus.
I started this petition because...
Every day, thousands of students make their way to campus in order to attend class. Some students walk, others skateboard, but a large number of students bike. Every morning, students get on their two-wheeled contraptions and pedal ferociously in order to get to class on time. However, many times the paths that the students are biking on are bumpy and overall in need of a glow up (meaning a transformation in appearance for the better). The numerous pot holes and imperfections in the bike paths are not only uncomfortable to bike on but also very dangerous.
