UConn, Let Dancers Use These Studios!

UConn, Let Dancers Use These Studios!

The Issue

When the new UConn recreation center opened, the mission statement was "to offer safe and quality programs, facilities, and services to the University of Connecticut community in order to foster personal growth and wellness." But, by not allowing dance organizations to use these "dance studios," they are not offering all their facilities for the dance community at UConn to use to stay healthy.

UConn does not allow dance organizations to book Studio A or Studio B in the new UConn recreation center for practices. These multi-purpose studios are perfect for dancing, they are spacious and have mirrors, but are strictly for group fitness classes only.

There is no reason why UConn can't allow dance groups to practice two hours a day. Based on this Fall 2019 schedule, roughly 64 hours are NOT being used in both Studio A and Studio B every week while the rec center is still open. If UConn would allow dance groups these spaces, we could practice more efficiently and would no longer have to practice in places like classrooms or hallways. (Especially when learning dances, we have to use the windows at night as mirrors).

If this is approved the dance organization I'm apart of (KCONN and Seoular), and many others would be excited to have a new area to enjoy just like the rest of the UConn community.
