The Issue

This week, members of the UConn community rallied together to defend our students, bringing together some of the legal resources necessary to protect those on our campus and across the state targeted with illegal visa and SEVIS revocations. The University Student Government further passed a resolution demanding the University and its leadership take further, proactive steps to counter any future impacts on our community.

In signing this petition, we commit to defend our fellow huskies and to join students and faculty in demonstrations against the continued illegal incursions by the federal government within our community.

We also need to know UConn and its administration are behind us in this fight. Their options are clear: either convene partner institutions now to collectively defy the Trump Administration or allow their students, faculty, institution, and community members to be individually attacked, disappeared, and dispossessed as the legal battles play out. The choice is clear.

We demand that the university immediately circulate an open letter to partner institutions stating the undersigned will publicly, unequivocally, and collectively:

(1) Ban ICE from private spaces on their campuses;

(2) Refuse to negotiate changes to university policies and procedures sought by the Trump Administration; and

(3) Establish defense funds to support community members impacted by both federal action and inaction.

IF UCONN DECIDES NOT TO DEFEND OUR COMMUNITY, THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY WILL.

In the absence of UConn’s response to our demands, we are prepared to:

  • Terminate all donations to UConn;
  • Cease recommending that prospective students attend UConn and actively discourage them from attending a university that would, at worst, participate in or, at best, acquiesce to harming them;
  • Directly contact investors and advise them against continued investment into the University;
  • Directly contact international partners and warn them of the risks of continued affiliation with the University, including sending exchange students to UConn;
  • Boycott events held at and by UConn, including student-alumni receptions; and,
  • Lodge complaints against UConn’s inaction with congressional representatives' offices, thereby ensuring that the complaints are in the public record.
