We Demand UCF Fire Charles Negy For His Racist and Insensitive Comments

The Issue

As a UCF student for two years now, I've seen a population that is ethnically diverse with people from every country, gender, and religion. The University of Central Florida prides itself on being an American melting pot of cultures, even stating on its website that "UCF benefits from a diverse faculty and staff who create a welcoming environment, a high quality of life, and opportunities to grow, learn and succeed." With that being said, there is no room for any student, teacher, or faculty member to have beliefs that destroy the welcoming environment that UCF is trying to cultivate. However, during a time where the country is grieving over the death of George Floyd, another black man killed by police brutality and hatred, Charles Negy, a psychology professor who ironically teaches cross-cultural psychology has come under fire for comments about African-Americans and systemic racism. He has numerous disturbing tweets targeted at not only black people but other minorities as well.  These opinions are simply appalling to read and does not align with the views of UCF. The UCF creed states "I will promote an open and supportive campus" and it's clear that with his hateful and insensitive comments, Professor Negy does not promote such an environment. If they truly believe in creating a campus where every UCF member can feel safe, then the University of Central Florida should terminate his employment effective immediately.
