Reconsider Closing UCCS Campus During Inclement Weather

Reconsider Closing UCCS Campus During Inclement Weather

The Issue

On the UCCS website, Public Safety states in regards to campus closures and delays due to inclement weather, "The primary premise for weather-related closing of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is that the institution will remain open unless there is unreasonable risk or danger to a substantial number of students and employees due to unreasonably hazardous driving conditions to campus." What they do not mention are the conditions on campus during these weather conditions, which do cause "unreasonable risk or danger" to students and faculty.

Facility Services does a fantastic at attempting to clear and sand the lots/roads before students get to campus. Although recently, this has not been the case. Despite their hard efforts, the snow has been difficult to keep up with resulting in the parking lots and roads on campus remaining hazardous.

Majority of the UCCS student body are commuter students. It can be expected when arriving on campus to find snow and ice coating each and every parking lot and road throughout campus. These are unnecessarily unsafe conditions for UCCS students who are required to come to campus when there are no closures. Additionally, after delays, the parking lots can still be expected to be dangerous to drive on, and even walk on. It is UCCS' responsibility to decide on the cancellation of campus during hazardous Colorado weather conditions.

We, the student body, would call on UCCS to be more lenient with closures if Facility Services cannot keep up with the weather.
