Stop the Suppression of Student Activism at the University of California
Lisa Lei and Jordan Brocious are UC Irvine students who are facing disciplinary charges from the UCI Office of Student Conduct.
Lisa Lei is an undergraduate student activist who is currently a student labor intern for AFSCME 3299 (American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees), and Jordan Brocious is a graduate student activist who is a board member of the UAW (United Automobile Workers) 2865.
Lisa Lei and Jordan Brocious have been targeted with unjust accusations by the UCI police department and the University of California for expressing their concerns about the University of California and the appointment of Janet Napolitano, the former head of homeland security who had been responsible of the deportation of over 1.5 million undocumented Americans.
On February 5th, the UCI Office of Student Conduct notified Lisa Lei of the following charges:
“Failure to Comply” in connection with an action to support workers at the UCI Medical Center on October 30th , and “Failure to Comply” as well as “Physical Abuse” in connection with a campus march of students and workers which took place on November 20th, the day of the AFSCME 3299 strike.
This is the latest in a series of intimidation and retaliation against student activists at UC Irvine that amounts to a campaign that silences dissent on campus.
On October 28, 2013, Janet Napolitano came to visit UCI as a part of her system-wide tour. The meeting was held behind closed doors, restricting students and the general public, further creating a climate of secrecy, and a lack of transparency. In addition, there were a number of police officers that made the environment unsafe, intimidating, and militarized. The meeting was held behind closed doors and it restricted students and the general public from voicing their concerns to President Napolitano. When students attempted to access the meeting, students were met with police aggression, which fostered an unsafe and hazardous environment for students. Furthermore, the presence of undercover cops brought spurious conduct charges against Brocious.
The impact of these charges is that it will silence student voices at the University of California. Brocious and Lei are being targeted because they are visible campus activists who have been vocal in supporting workers’ rights and who have raised concerns about campus climate in relation to Janet Napolitano and her presence of President of the University of California. Student concerns regarding increased policing and surveillance under her leadership are solidified by these charges, as they reflect the unjust suppression of student activism.
This is part of a troubling pattern of intimidation and retaliation against student activists that we have endured as students. who have done our best to articulate our concerns regarding Janet Napolitano’s appointment as President of the University of California.
We demand that the UC Irvine Office of Student Conduct drop the charges against Lisa Lei and Jordan Brocious immediately.
We demand that UC President Janet Napolitano commits to putting an end to all policing of student protests and allow students to fully exercise their First Amendment rights. By doing so, it will contribute to a campus climate that is safe for students, especially for student activists.
