Save the Children’s and Young Adult Literature Library in Tolman Hall

This petition had 328 supporters

We recently discovered that our beloved library, the Children’s and Young Adult Literature Library in Tolman Hall, is at risk of closing and perhaps becoming an extension of the Psychology library. We, as members of the UC Berkeley community, cannot stand for this injustice.

As students, educators, and other members of the UC Berkeley community, we value and cherish the beloved landmark of literature that is the Children’s and Young Adult Literature Library in Tolman Hall. For the dedicated students of UC Berkeley, the small nook in Tolman serves as a place to return to our roots as young readers, learning to read and gain admission into worlds before unknown to us. It is in this library that we can get away from the hustle and bustle of the University and slip back into our imaginations, into a room as familiar as the worn pages of our favorite childhood books. This library does more than house ancient artifacts of our past, but it also shelters us from our hectic lives. Of the 32 libraries on campus, this is the only one of its kind.

The library is a vital resource to students, especially those studying and exploring Children’s Literature and Nonsense. The Child in You: Read, Write, and Publish Children’s Literature decal uses the library as an unofficial headquarters and requires students to visit the library and most of the students check out books for the class there. Many students use this space as a quiet study area, surrounded by pictures and words of inspiration (and reading Dr. Seuss makes for a great study break!). Others hold events and presentations in its spacious, well lit corridors.

Please do not take away our wardrobe to Narnia, our letter to Hogwarts, our bridge to Terabithia, our golden ticket to the Chocolate Factory, and our ship to Neverland.

Please sign the petition to allow us to stand up on behalf of the library and have a say in protecting this landmark. After you've signed the petition, find some time this week or weekend to go into Tolman, explore, and check out a book or two. Children's books offer inspiration for writer's block, serve as tokens of our past (“I remember reading this!"), and they are just a good time all around. Please save the Children’s Literature Library in Tolman Hall.
