Banning the purchase of plastic bags at UBC

Banning the purchase of plastic bags at UBC
The Issue
Studies have shown that plastics not only account for a majority of the litter found on ocean and sea floors, but also negatively impact various other ecosystems around the world, destroying natural habitats and hindering ecosystem services such as water quality and sustainable food sources. Starting with the removal plastic bags at UBC would be a step towards reducing the total plastic waste created and we hope that this will set an example for other institutions on a larger scale.
By gaining support from this petition, we aspire to influence the management at UBC to ban or add more limitations surrounding the purchase of plastic bags, like making them more expensive. With this, we hope to drive students and faculty towards the use of reusable bags. We wish for those who sign to use reusable bags regardless of the outcome of this petition.
(This is a group project for a GEOG course at UBC regarding environmental sustainability, but the intent of this petition is still serious)
