Hello Everyone,
We are at 191 signatures--writers and scholars are responding to the the counter-letter. Many of the original signers of the UBC Accountable letter have taken their names off.
Below I have pasted my message to Joseph Boyden and UBC Accountable today. I'm waiting for a reply from him. Thank you all of you who have signed and who have shared the counter-letter with others. I'll keep you updated about what Boyden says, if he replies.
Regards, Julie Rak
Dear Joseph Boyden and others,
I am writing to you because I wrote the counter-letter to yours. I am writing to ask that you withdraw your letter and provide another that acknowledges the need for openness and fairness for everyone in the process, not just for Steven Galloway.
Many scholars and other writers in Canada are uneasy about your letter. Some are heartbroken that writers whose work they respect have signed something that devalues and silences women who have much less power than many of the people on your list. I know that you probably don't agree with me and aren't happy about what I have done. But in light of what is happening in Val d'Or, in the United States, what happened to the Murdered and Missing Indigenous women, what happened to the women who tried to tell the truth about Jian Ghomeshi, I'm still asking that you rethink the strategy you are using to defend Steven Galloway. I'm not saying that you can't support him. I'm asking that you say something about these students too, before all the facts do come out about what has happened at UBC.
Please feel free to write to me at the email address above. Thank you for considering my request. I very much hope to hear from you.
Regards,
Julie Rak
