STOP Supermarket Waste
The Issue
Grocery stores intentionally over-price food, then "mark it down," as a "sale item," in order to clear "old" or nearly expired items. They do this primarily to fresh foods and dairy, as well as "organic" produce. Look at the bananas in the picture. Large supermarket chains in U.S. consider these to be "rotten." They are not rotten, but merely ripe. Despite this, BILLIONS of tons of bananas and other produce are thrown out WEEKLY across the country that are not rotten, in order to make way for "fresher" produce in order to keep high prices constant.
Labeling produce as "organic" is a gimic stores use in order to mark up produce to increase their bottom line. (Any vegetable or fruit that comes from soil is organic. If you don't want produce contaminated with pesticides, simply wash your produce prior to eating). Nuts such as almonds, macadamia and pistachio are notoriously over-priced. HUGE storage areas and silos toss BILLIONS of such foods away annually as they rot; billions of gallons of milk, fruit and loaves of bread are thrown away, too.
Safeway, for instance, throws away multiple TONS of bananas WEEKLY, if they have "spots." A large number of shoppers (myself included) have witnessed the produce managers Safeways nationwide tossing spotted bananas into a container that was the size of a Dough-boy swimming pool. (No exaggeration). Multiple shoppers asked to take several bunches, as they were being thrown out to use in recipes calling for ripe bananas. SO MANY delicious recipes can be made using ripe bananas; they can also be used to make homemade baby food, which many people can't afford to make.
We were denied access to them, and were told by the manager that it is "against Safeway's policy," to give away "damaged" produce." To say the least, we were FLOORED by this; our mouths hanging open. Even the manager was disgusted by this so-called "policy."
A large population of our own working-class people in the United States live at or below the poverty level; the majority of students in low-income/inner-city schools are on the free-lunch program. Over-pricing food that is grown in abundance and thrown out is not only greedy and wasteful, but sinful. This needs to stop NOW!
