Hydraulic fracturing ('fracking') is a drilling process that extracts natural gas from deep within the earth, and is used all over the United States. Fracking pumps highly pressurized and toxic 'fracking fluids' into our ground in order to release the natural gas from shale deposits. The toxic chemicals used in these fracking fluids (as well as the natural gas itself) can leak to the surface and into our soil, rivers, and groundwater, and can cause serious health concerns such as cancer and birth defects in newborns. If that wasn't bad enough, fracking also wastes millions of gallons of water! Reports of flammable tap water in Colorado, methane explosions in West Virginia, and poisoned water in Pennsylvania are just a few examples of the dangers of fracking.
