Recognize the Oriental and Eastern Orthodox Christmas and provide academic days off
Why this petition matters
The Oriental and Eastern Orthodox religion has million of followers in the United States, yet their celebration of Christmas is virtually non-existent in schools throughout the country. If January 6/7 falls on a weekday, school children are forced to choose between either attending school or attending church to celebrate their religion and heritage.
Numerous other religions and cultures are given days off so they can celebrate their respective beliefs. We are simply asking for parity. Providing January 6 and January 7 off will provide children of the Oriental and Eastern Orthodox religion with the recognition of their religion. This would encompass the Coptic Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox as well as several other Orthodox Churches.
