Men and Women that serve on our frontlines deserve so much more respect than we as American citizens could ever give them; however, we cannot gloss over the need to remember there are countless other people and animals that help our soldiers.  Many K9’s that sniff out Improvised Explosives Devices (IED’s) have saved countless amounts of lives beyond their handlers.  Bomb dogs are often overlooked while active and certainly after they have retired.

These battle buddies have their own ranks, they have tattoos inside of their ears, and they will do anything for their team and their handler.  As of now the United States Armed Forces classify the use of canines as military working dogs as “equipment”.  Not only heartbreaking but this is grossly depriving these hard working and honorable dogs from transitioning back to a civilian life.  This creates hardships for their handlers once their tours are complete due to separation and the dog is sold elsewhere until it is deemed “excess equipment” and is retired.

Sometimes handlers are reunited with their battle buddy however because of this classification of “equipment” it deprives the military working dog from ongoing medical care cause by past work history and it does not allow them to be buried in Veterans Cemeteries. This petition urges our congress to recategorize military working dogs as members of the armed forces to bury them in a dedicated section of a veteran’s cemetery in an honorable way for the service and protection they gave to women, men, and children all over, for the rest of us to live as we do.
