Protect Your Family! Oppose the Fake "Chemical Safety" Bill
You know the impact that harmful chemicals can have on our children and families. From deadly chemicals like asbestos to every day health threats like lead paint or arsenic-tainted drinking water, we are all surrounded by chemicals that are known to cause cancer, birth defects, infertility and other serious diseases.
The reason: the main U.S. chemicals law was adopted nearly forty years ago. The law was ineffective even then, and with thousands of untested, new chemicals introduced every year, the government is overwhelmed by the health and safety problems created by these disease-causing substances.
As of July 20, 2015, the Senate TSCA reform bill, known as the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act, is at a pivotal turning point. The Senate may vote on the bill in early September. We need your help NOW to let our Senators know that this bill is still seriously flawed and must be changed before the vote. Without changes, the bill could take us backward when it comes to our children's and families' safety.
A TRUE chemical safety bill cannot contain:
- A provision that will leave Americans unprotected from the most dangerous chemicals, like asbestos, by prohibiting states from making or enforcing their own safety rules while EPA takes years to "assess" the health threat these chemicals pose. This harmful “regulatory void” language must be removed.
- Language that leaves vulnerable California's Proposition 65 law, which has successfully protected Americans nationwide from dangerous chemicals for nearly 30 years, and other State laws so that states can continue to protect us from harmful chemicals.
- A lack of an adequate mechanism to immediately get the worst chemicals, like asbestos and other chemicals that are persistent, bioaccumalitive and toxic (PBT) off the market and identifying and reviewing other high risk chemicals.
