As many of you are aware Texas suffered the week following valentines day in 2021. Most of us suffered and braved the cold with our families as we were left without power due to mismanagement of Texas's power by ERCOT. Nearing the end of our suffering news broke that Ted Cruz and his family had managed to escape the severe weather and power outages to go on a vacation to Mexico. However many news outlets failed to mention that they left behind the families rescue pup - Snowflake. While yes in the hands of a dog sitter, Snowflake was still left in the cold as we were. Many Texans and their pets suffered without power in the cold and for many of our pets this led to health issues such as hypothermia, frostbite, as well as other issues like pneumonia, and colds due to the prolonged exposure to the extreme temperatures.  

How is it acceptable for the Cruz's to escape this bone chilling cold weather to warmth and not think to bring along Snowflake? This pup is a fraction the size we humans are and they rely on us for their basic needs. Yes this pup was left with a sitter. But I ask, if the weather is severe enough for people to feel the need to escape to Mexico during a pandemic after explicitly preaching to their constituents the need to remain home during these times, why is it acceptable to leave your pet behind in the conditions you sought so hard to escape? The Cruz's leaked texts boasted about them managing to get a room at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancún, at $309 per night, the texts outline that they felt the need for the trip as their home was "FREEZING". Knowing these conditions their home was in, how was it acceptable to leave Snowflake behind with a sitter? Cost was clearly not a concern with paying $309 for a room at a luxury resort, not to mention the cost of the last second airline tickets. This behaviour is unacceptable and they need to be held accountable. If the conditions are so severe that you and your family felt the need to flee to another country in a pandemic then why leave behind your family pet in those exact conditions thinking that leaving them with a sitter is acceptable when that does not change the state of the weather. 

Due to this display of apathy I call for the Cruz's to relinquish ownership of Snowflake so that the pup may be taken in by a family who will always keep Snowflake in their heart and mind when making decisions. As a pet owner, especially one of a rescue, we are to take measures and precautions to protect these animals and love them to their hearts content and beyond. Snowflake deserves a family who will provide them with this and not shed them off on a sitter during a natural disaster. If the Cruz's do not relinquish ownership willingly I humbly ask that the United States Government steps in and intervenes so that Snowflake may be given the chance to be priority in events such as these.
