Adding therapy dogs into classrooms

The Issue

Let's face it, students across the world are constantly stressed with everything that goes on in their lives. Whether that is assignments, sports, or just life. But let's think about the impact dogs can have on those situations. My proposition to change something in this world is to, add therapy dogs into schools and the classrooms.  Dogs can drastically change kids' moods and keep them more engaged by, decreasing their anxiety and keeping them more focused. By contacting the school board, they have the power to make this change and make school a more calming and less stressful place.
Therapy dogs didn’t get the nickname “miracle workers” for no reason, these dogs have a calming effect on students and teachers. Having dogs in the classroom would result in many benefits such as, promoting better self-esteem, stimulating memory and increasing problem solving skills, and proving physical stimulation. It has been proven that 8-10 percent of teens ages 13-18 have some type of an anxiety disorder. By adding a therapy dogs to the classroom, it can lift the mood of the room and relieve some of the student's personal troubles. In the classrooms that therapy dogs have been active in, students’ peer interaction became more frequent and more positive. The participation in the classroom increased as well.
Dogs can be a calming factor to help students to make them feel at ease before they take these tests. A friendly therapy dog can help with all the other problems too. Dogs create a sense of security and a safe place. The whole school atmosphere can be intimidating, the dogs will provide a shoulder to lean on and sometimes create a reason to be engaged in class.
In order to make this change happen the school board would have to be heavily involved. Even if the schools slowly transitioned from having the dogs visit once a week, into them staying in the classrooms full time the outcome would be extremely beneficial. In order to get this change to happen, a lot of training would be set into place, along with a slow transition into the dogs becoming a permanent factor in the classrooms. The process of inducing a therapy dog would also have to be explained to the students, in order to let them know what to and not to do and how to react in certain situations. The most important aspect in introducing to classrooms is to inform and educate everyone on the dogs first. The therapy dogs reduce stress and increase educational aspects in a classroom creating a positive and beneficial atmosphere in classrooms. Join me in introducing our furry friends into classrooms!
