Release Sonia and her three children from detention

Sonia and her three young children have spent 6 months behind bars, after fleeing horrific violence in their home country of El Salvador, including the brutal rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl in their village. Sonia's oldest daughter, Abi, will turn 11 this year, and she has two younger brothers: Valentín is 9 and Moises just turned 3 last month, while in detention.
Now Sonia and her three children have been locked up for 6 months in a private, for-profit detention center in Karnes, TX, where there have been allegations of sexual abuse, extortion and harrassment.
The Senate estimates that it costs $266 per person per day to lock up a woman or a child at a detention facility like Karnes. In the past six months, our government has spent $191,520 of taxpayer money to keep Sonia and her children behind bars. Almost $50,000 dollars to lock up a 2-year-old for six months.
And just last week, a judge denied her children bond, meaning that the family will continue to stay in detention, even though the pastor of an evangelical church (La Voz de Cristo al Mundo) has offered to sponsor them while they go through their asylum hearings outside of detention.
Urge Immigration and Customs Enforcement to exercise prosecutorial discretion and release this family on their own recognizance. This mother and her children are not a threat to public safety and should no longer be subject to imprisonment at the cost of the taxpayer. Release Sonia and her children now.
