Urgent: Tell Congress to Fight Corruption and Poverty
The Issue
Congress is expected to vote any day now on one of the most important anti-poverty and anti-corruption laws in our nation. We must stand up and stop them. Please sign my petition to help protect the world's poorest people and help fight corruption.
I have traveled to countries like Ghana and Cambodia and witnessed how people’s lives have been directly affected by a landmark bipartisan Cardin-Lugar anti-corruption rule known as “Section 1504.”
But Congress will vote to gut this essential law as early as this week.
The Cardin-Lugar anti-corruption rule requires oil and mining companies operating around the world to publish the trillions of dollars in payments they make to poor countries for the right to drill and mine. It's important to fighting corruption and poverty around the world because it arms citizens in the developing world with information they can use to follow this money and ensure their governments invest it in health care, education, and infrastructure to fight poverty. More than 30 countries have passed legislation modeled after the Cardin-Lugar rule since it passed in 2010.
We need just 51 votes to protect this law in the Senate. I'm urging you to ask your Senator to OPPOSE Representative Bill Huizenga’s joint resolution (H.J. Res. 41) which would roll back the Cardin-Lugar anti-corruption rule. A vote to overturn Cardin-Lugar is a vote for corruption. It’s a vote to keep people impoverished.
Rolling it back will be a blow to poor people everywhere and allow corrupt officials to steal with no accountability.
Urge the Senate to preserve the anti-corruption rule by saying NO to Representative Bill Huizenga's legislation. Please sign my petition and take a stand with the world’s poorest people and help fight corruption.
Dial 1-888-252-2329 to call your Senator now and tell them to oppose Senate Joint Resolution 9, the repeal of Cardin-Lugar.
Sincerely,
