Comprehensive Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney Transplant Patients Act
Comprehensive Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney Transplant Patients Act will ensure that kidney transplant patients have life long access to immunosuppressive medications.
While Medicare covers a lifetime of dialysis, kidney transplant recipients lose their Medicare coverage 36 months after transplant. Without access to immunosuppressive drugs, transplant patients risk losing their new kidney and are forced to return to dialysis and/or to the transplant wait list.
Individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), who require dialysis or a transplant to survive, are eligible for Medicare regardless of age or other disability. ESRD patients on dialysis have no limit to their medicare eligibility regardless of their age. However, kidney transplant patients are only eligible for Medicare for 36 months following their transplant unless they are over the age of 65 or are disabled. Lifetime access to immunosuppressive medications would decrease the risk of losing the gift of life due to lack of access to critical medications.
Medicare spends $2,683 per transplant recipient for immunosuppressive drugs under Part B.
Medicare spends an average of $84,450 per dialysis patient.
The annual cost of immunosuppressive medications is far less than the annual cost of dialylsis.
