Letter: Support the Access to Marketplace Insurance Act
LETTER TO THE EDITOR | THE POST-CRESCENT
8:16 am CDT April 12, 2018
My late father was the recipient of two kidney transplants given to him through the love and charity of others, and while he eventually lost his battle, millions around the country are suffering from life-threatening diseases that not only impact their health but also their livelihood.
Being the great country we are, charities have formed around the nation to help those who face these horrible diseases with their insurance premium payments. Unfortunately, that could all change if Congress doesn’t act soon.
For the past few years, an effort has been underway by insurance companies to remove these “expensive” patients from their customer rolls. Private insurers are prohibiting those that get charitable assistance from using that charity help to pay their premiums. In essence, insurance companies are trying to force these extremely sick Americans off their plans by making premium payments impossible.
Luckily, a bipartisan bill with over 125 cosponsors — five of which are from right here in Wisconsin — has been introduced in Congress that would end these pathetic attempts by insurance companies. Speaker Paul Ryan needs to act and pass the Access to Marketplace Insurance Act and ensure that people just like my late father can’t be targeted because of their diseases.
