The Electoral College system distorts the one-person, one-vote principle of democracy because electoral votes are not distributed according to the population. In 8% of the last 57 presidential elections, the individual who won the popular vote did not win the election. This causes a president to enter office with a weak mandate and creates resentment within the population. Why should a Republican vote in California not count? Why should a Democrat vote in Alabama not count? The Electoral College system is no longer needed in our society. 

The Pew Research Center ranks the U.S. at the bottom of voter participation. In the last election in 2016, 46% of Americans did not vote. While there are many reasons for this, the ability of people to choose between work and voting should not occur. The 2nd Tuesday in November should be declared a national holiday. Other countries like Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, India, New Zealand, and a number of other countries all hold elections on weekends or holidays.

While there are other issues with the U.S. election that need to be resolved, these two non-partisan issues should be addressed by Congress in the form of a constitutional amendment.
