Abolish Presidential Pardons
The Issue
The U.S. Constitution gives U.S. presidents the absolute, unchallenged power to pardon or grant clemency to individuals convicted of federal offenses. More than 20,000 pardons and commutations had been issued In the 20th century; many more have been granted under Presidents Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Trump.
The pardon of Trump political trickster Roger Stone, criminally convicted of lying to Congress, is but the latest egregious example of a flawed policy, privilege and practice. Where is the justice when convicted criminals like Stone and other “bad actors” in our nation’s history gratuitously receive a “get out of jail free” card, just days before serving a sentence?
Decisions like these fly in the face of justice under the law. They erode the public’s faith in government for and by the people, heighten mistrust with the body politic, and deepen the divide between the “haves” and “have nots”.
It’s time for the people’s representatives to address this miscarriage of justice and presidential power. Until that happens, the public will remain skeptical that “no one is above the law”. It’s easy to say that. It’s tough to do something about it. Please only pardon turkeys at Thanksgiving!
