Tell the FDA to Change Their Discriminatory Blood Donation Policies

This petition had 27,038 supporters

Each year, countless Americans are turned away from donating blood based on policies that were created with well-meaning intentions, but discriminatory consequences. Current policies from the FDA disproportionately prevent gay/queer men, heterosexual/bisexual women, trans/queer individuals, and those who have tattoos and piercings. While different exceptions and discretion varies on how the laws are applied to each of these four groups, the fact that remains is that the policies prevent a large amount of usable blood from being donated each year.

We seek to change that. We believe that if the policies were changed to focus on high-risk activities instead of targeting specific identities, they would be both more effective and allow for more useable blood to be donated.
