Imagine a world without animals such as elephants, seals, and sharks. Every day animals are driven to extinction. Is this world a world we want to live in?  Hello ladies and gentlemen, I am Baha Ahmed, and I am extremely passionate about preserving all the species of animals being driven to extinction by hunters, poachers, and the people that are encroaching on their habitat. Hunters in particular are our biggest worry.  These hunters are harming fragile ecosystems for trophies, yes, for trophies. Almost 30% of the species that have lived on Earth are already extinct.  We are at a time where extinction occurs at a natural rate of 1 out of 5 species per year, where every year, 100s of species go extinct.

Moreover, this is such a big problem because the extinction of these innocent animals is slowly killing our ecosystems one by one, which will overtime affect us humans. All of this is happening because of unethical human activities like hunting. Legal hunters kill tens of millions of animals per year. For each of those animals, another animal is illegally killed. Whether done legally or illegally, all types of hunting have led to extinction of species. If not controlled, many more animals will be doomed to extinction. Illegal wildlife trade generates up to 20 billion dollars each year, making it the fourth most lucrative illegal trade operation on the planet – just after drugs, human trafficking and the arms trade. The animals who fall victim to this trade are quickly becoming threatened and endangered. Some of these animals are rhinos who are being poached one every 8 hours. On the other hand, the African Elephants who are being poached at a rate of 100 every day which is about 1 every 15 minutes. Poaching is not limited to exotic and threatened species. Deer and other wildlife species are often hunted “out of season”. Millions of animals are killed every year.

Now that we have covered the problem, how can we address this issue? I really believe that we should address this issue just like Atticus Finch, a fictional character from the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In this book, Atticus taught us not to take advantage of an unfair skill that has been given to us over most living things. According to Atticus’s advice we should not take advantage of a skill like the one hunting or killing animals, and these skills should not be used unless it is 100% necessary. The best way to do that is by banning hunters from practicing this sport, where trophies are innocent animals.

However, how, how can we get this done, how can we get our voices heard, how can we take a stand, how? We need to work together.  Saving these innocent animals is everyone’s responsibility and you can start by signing a petition that will be directly sent to the heads of our state. This petition is going to be on the website Change.org. It is also necessary that you! Yes, you inform the people around you about what legal and illegal hunters do to our environment and how they are destroying the lives of thousands of animals every single month. These hunters are not just killing the animals they are killing our hopes of actually advancing in medicine, these hunters are eliminating any chances of advancements in Animal Science. Are these animals not worth our time to support and save them by just banning these hunters from destroying any more lives? Let us get our voices heard.

You must be thinking and asking yourself why I should care, or why is this even important. To answer that question I want you to close your eyes and imagine walking through a forest and you see dead animals everywhere, all around you see different species you see all kinds of animals dead and blood is flooding the place all around you, how would you feel? Would this affect you as a person? This is a very important issue because we are continuously losing environmental factors coming from animals that are unfortunately being targeted by hunters. These hunters are not careful of what they are causing or how they are harming themselves every day. Let us stop these hunters from hunting our wildlife to extinction.
