The Issue

There would be many benefits in banning bottom trawling. Bottom trawling is when boats drag large nets with heavyweights across the ocean floor, capturing anything in its path (Marine Conservation Council). Bottom trawling is so bad that it is known as the most irreversible and destructive fishing methods in the world. Not only does bottom trawling can catch extreme amounts of fish, but it also comes with the consequence of bycatch. Bycatch is when animals that are unintentionally caught by the large nets. Some things that are captured and killed from bycatch are dolphins, sharks, turtles, unwanted fish, plants and coral (Particle). Banning bottom trawling would stop all of those issues and possibly end overfishing all together.
