Dear Supporters,
Cree Lighting manufacturers LED streetlights. Cree has just released a paper stating that the entire lighting industry has used the wrong metrics for measuring LED light! This is a massive admission by the lighting industry that they have been measuring LEDs wrong for the last 20 years.
While Cree makes streetlights, the same concept applies to LED headlights. NHTSA, the IIHS, and the automakers have been measuring LED light using lighting metrics that were designed for a different type of light. FMVSS-108 is not applicable to LED headlights because LEDs emit non-uniform luminance.
Cree says, "Not one of the existing metrics takes into account the non-uniform emitting surface of a LED luminaire."
I have already notified NHTSA of this publication, and Senator Wyden's office. You can help our cause by calling your Senator in Washington, D.C. and ask the staff who to send this article to.
This document is a tremendous step for our cause.
Sincerely,
Mark Baker
