Dear Jennifer Homendy, Chair, National Transportation Safety Board,
I am following up on my previous email from September 8, 2021 regarding dangerous, toxic, and discriminatory directed-beam LED flashing lights for which I did not yet receive a response.
In this email, I have copied Mackenzie Praytor, Executive Assistant to Steven Cliff, Acting Director of NHTSA, Elizabeth Mazzae, Human Factors Engineer at NHTSA, Anthony Deluise, assistant to Nancy LeaMond, Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer of American Association of Retired Persons, Sachin Pavithran, Director of the US Access Board, Pete Buttigieg, Secretary of Transportation, Congressman Peter DeFazio, Congressman Ro Khanna, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell. I have not copied any members of the media this email, which may be necessary at a later time.
I am also copying a few of our members who are sick and tired of being harmed by directed-beam LED lights and whose eyes and central nervous systems have taken all they can take. Not a single person or agency in the entire United States government, and not a single advocacy group, other than SoftLights.org, is attempting to solve the LED crisis. We wish to change this.
The reason that I have copied so many influencers is due our members' desire to end the suffering and the lack of will on the part of the government to address the fact that LED chips emit 200,000,000 nits peak luminance, while human eyes can tolerate a maximum of 50,000 nits, and comfort level is 300 nits. We are looking for government leadership on this issue.
Given that so many crashes and other reports of harm related to directed beam LED headlights and LED flashing lights have been reported to the NTSB and NHTSA, the government needs to be taking action.
We would like to engage with you and your counterpart at NHTSA, along with representatives of advocacy groups such as AARP, National Organization of Women, and the American Automobile Association.
Sincerely,
Mark Baker, B.S.E.E.
