U.S. Government: Take Action to Force the Palestinian Authority to Help Return the 3 Kidnapped Israeli Students
Around June 12, 2014, three Jewish students were kidnapped from Gush Etzion by a Palestinian terrorist group, and are being held somewhere in the West Bank.
They are: Gilad Shaar, 16, Naftali Frenkel, 16, and Eyal Yifrach, 19.
Frenkel is an American citizen (and a minor), which imposes an unusually strong obligation upon the U.S. government to do all that it can to make sure he is returned safely.
The Palestinian Authority (PA) is not believed to be directly involved in the kidnapping, but as the legal government of the Palestinian areas of the West Bank, it is responsible for suppressing terrorist and extremist factions within its territory and cooperating with Israel in attempting to locate its missing students. Additionally, several months ago it entered into a unity government with Hamas -- an internationally designated terrorist organization -- which makes it even more complicit in acts of terrorism committed against Israel.
So far, the PA has only stated that it is not responsible for crimes committed in areas controlled by Israel and given Israel lip service. This is not acceptable.
The PA receives millions of dollars a year from the United States through various means, among them UN organs and international humanitarian organizations.
We petition the U.S. Congress and State Department to withold aid from the PA -- from whatever channels it may flow through -- and to do all in their power to compel the PA to ensure the safe return of the students from its territory.
