The Issue

Like teachers, TRIO professionals serve low-income students and work in some of the most dire school districts and communities. TRIO professionals are educators who teach basic skills, STEM disciplines and other subjects in middle, secondary, and post-secondary institutions. In addition, TRIO Personnel are Public Servants, in many cases, and fit the criteria listed under the Public Services Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) in that they "Qualifying employment is any employment with a federal, state, or local government agency, entity, or organization or a non-profit organization that has been designated as tax-exempt by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). The type or nature of employment with the organization does not matter for PSLF purposes. Additionally, the type of services that these public service organizations provide does not matter for PSLF purposes." Lastly TRIO Programs professionals have worked tirelessly to help students complete high school, enter, and graduate from colleges and universities across America. TRIO programs have an overwhelming success rate in retention, persistence, and graduation that is often superior to rates for students who do not participate in these programs. TRIO programs have been providing public service to students since their inception in the 1960s under President Johnson's administration. TRIO professionals have earned the right to have their student loans forgiven like other educators and public servants.
