Demand change from your state representative

Hey everyone! Thank you for everyone who has been sharing and signing this petition. I’m asking everybody to take a couple minutes to write a letter to their state representative. You can find your state representative at this website. On your browser there’s a image of the U.S. and an option to input your zip code to figure out which one is yours. Below is a short message you are welcome to copy and use as your own! If you have the time and want to, feel free to add your own story to your letter!

Dear representatives name,

I am writing to ask for you to advocate for changing the definition of who qualifies as an independent student according to the FAFSA criteria. The present definition is out-dated and leaves out thousands of students who are self supporting. A better definition would mirror the definition followed on tax forms: that if you provide over 50% of your own income you are considered independent. This change would make earning ones education financially viable for thousands across our state and the nation as a whole.

I’m not the only one asking for this change. We’ve started a petition at Change.org/IAmIndependent.
