Change the requirements for independency status for FASFA

Change the requirements for independency status for FASFA
The Issue
The laws of dependency/independency for the FASFA is outdated and needs changed. It is unfair to expect people to be dependent of their parents far past the beginning of adulthood. The independence qualifications now are , 24 years of age, married or separated, have children, have a dependent/s, be active duty of U.S armed forces or a veteran, have deceased parents from 13 years old, be emancipated as a minor, and be homeless or may become homeless. In my personal experience, my educational expenses have been my responsibility but I have been forced to use my father's income which has caused me to get less and less financial aid throughout the years. As a student who has a full time job, pays all of my expenses, no longer living with my parent and no longer depending on my parent for anything; I believe that others and myself in this type of situation should be eligible to be an independent student. If this went into effect it would greatly help more students in need of financial support with their educational career. It has been really hard this semester to find loans without a cosigner to pay my financial institution for my fees. In turn I am going to have to pay out of pocket for my expenses and that's just for one semester, with more to come. This is a long overdue change that needs to occur and it will help many students who don't depend on their parents for financial help and those who's parents refuse to help. Please consider signing. Thank you.
