Raise the minimum size of hamster cages in USA
Why this petition matters

The minimum hamster cage in the UK is 620 sq.in, Hamster Society Singapore is at least 620 sq.in. and the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture requires at least 775 sq.in. But unfortunatelythe minimum in the US is 450 sq.in and there is much evidence suggesting that the minimum should be raised. An ideal size would be 750 sq.in. Just because hamsters are small doesn’t mean they need a small cage. Hamsters travel up to 6 miles during the night, and they are not able to do that easily in a small cage. They love to run, explore and burrow, and can’t possibly do that in a small cage. In order to have a proper size wheel, enough enrichment for them, at least 6” of bedding and enough floor space, they need to have a cage that is at least 620 sq.in but remember, bigger is always better! Hamsters simply can not live a happy life in a small cage. They are very active pets and to carry out all their natural behaviors they need a big cage. These pets deserve correct care and with the small amount of time they are living, they need a big cage.
