Petitioning U.S. Congress, President Obama

"Invasion is the wrong course because it merely inflames the violence further, both within Syria and without. We must exhaust the following paths first before seeking a military course of action." - Michael Shank, director of Foreign Policy at the Friends Committee on National Legislation and U.S. Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-AZ)

The United States should NOT engage in a military intervention in Syria.

1. A military strike in Syria will plunge the United States into another war, causing more violence, devastation, loss of live, displacement, and instability in the Middle East. Military intervention will also cause more violence, not less.

2. The idea that a military strike will not plunge the U.S. into war is a fallacy. For politicians to promise that a strike will be brief and strategic, and not constitute an invasion, is dangerously dishonest. Promises were made and broken in Iraq. That war cost over 200,000 lives, 2.2 trillion dollars, and ten years. The Iraq war increased terrorism in the region and devastated Iraq's infrastructure.

3. Diplomatic approaches have not been exhausted. The United States can demonstrate true leadership by engaging stakeholders, the international community, and human rights institutions and putting pressure on Assad's regime.

4. The American people don't want another war. Public opinion is opposed to a military strike by the United States.

We must learn from the lessons of the past. The United States must genuinely exhaust all diplomatic approaches and not rush to create more devastation in Syria.
